Indication:

  • Eliquis (Apixaban) is an anticoagulant medication used to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. It is also indicated for the treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and for the prevention of recurrent DVT and PE after initial therapy.

Side Effects:

  • Common side effects include bleeding more easily than normal, such as frequent nosebleeds, heavier menstrual bleeding, bleeding gums, and longer bleeding from cuts.
  • Serious side effects can include severe bleeding, including internal bleeding, especially in the stomach, intestines, or brain, which can be life-threatening.
  • Other side effects may include nausea, allergic reactions, and anemia.
  • Immediate medical attention is required if there are symptoms of serious bleeding, such as dizziness, weakness, prolonged bleeding, or unusual bruising.

Doses Available:

  • Apixaban is available in tablet form in 2.5 mg and 5 mg dosages.

How to Take:

  • The dose of apixaban depends on the condition being treated, patient characteristics like kidney function, age, and body weight.
  • Typically, for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation, the usual dose is 5 mg taken twice a day. For some patients, such as those who are older, have kidney problems, or weigh less, the dose may be 2.5 mg twice daily.
  • For DVT and PE treatment, the typical dose is 10 mg taken twice daily for 7 days, followed by 5 mg twice daily.
  • Apixaban should be taken with or without food, and at the same times every day.
  • It’s important not to stop taking apixaban without first talking to your healthcare provider, as this can increase the risk of blood clots.

Additional Information:

  • Patients should inform healthcare providers, including dentists, about their use of apixaban, especially before any surgeries or medical/dental procedures.
  • Activities that have a higher risk of causing injury or bleeding should be approached with caution.
  • Alcohol and other medications that can increase bleeding risk should be used cautiously.
  • Always consult with a healthcare provider for personalized dosing and management plans.
