What is Wegovy?

Wegovy (Semaglutide) is a prescription medication approved by the FDA for weight management. It contains the active ingredient semaglutide, which is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Wegovy is intended to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

What is Wegovy Used for?

Wegovy is used for weight management. It is prescribed to adults with obesity (a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher) or to those who are overweight (a BMI of 27 or higher) with at least one weight-related health condition, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.

How Does Wegovy Work?

Wegovy works by mimicking the action of a natural hormone called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). This hormone helps regulate appetite and food intake by signaling the brain to reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness. Wegovy also slows down the emptying of the stomach which further contributes to a feeling of satiety. In this way, Wegovy helps people eat less and lose weight.

There are 5 different dose strengths for Wegovy. The starting dose is 0.25 mg once a week, and it is gradually increased every four weeks. For example, after 4 weeks on the starting dose, the dosage is increased to 0.5 mg once a week. This gradual increase helps your body adapt to the medication more comfortably. If your healthcare provider decides to increase your Wegovy dosage based on the treatment plan, the dose will be increased at 4-week intervals. Further increments can be as follows:
  • 1 mg once a week after 4 weeks at the 0.5 mg dose
  • 1.7 mg once a week after 4 weeks at the 1 mg dose
  • 2.4 mg once a week after 4 weeks at the 1.7 mg dose

Maximum Dose of Wegovy

The maximum recommended dose of Wegovy is 2.4 mg once a week.

How to Inject Wegovy?

Hold the pen firmly against your skin until the yellow indicator stops moving, indicating that the full dose has been administered. You can inject Wegovy into your upper arm, the front of your upper thigh, or your abdomen. Note: You can administer Wegovy with or without food. If you’re taking Wegovy and start seeing serious side effects, call your healthcare provider immediately or go to the nearest hospital emergency room.

Wegovy Warnings

There is a potential risk of thyroid tumors, including cancer, with Wegovy. Consult your healthcare provider if you notice any lumps or swelling in your neck, experience hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, or shortness of breath. These could be signs of thyroid cancer as found in rodent studies. However, it is not yet known whether Wegovy may cause thyroid tumors or medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) in humans.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wegovy

Is Wegovy FDA approved for weight loss?
Yes, Wegovy is FDA-approved for weight loss. It was approved in 2021 for adults with obesity or overweight individuals who have at least one weight-related condition, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.
How much does Wegovy cost?
In the US, Wegovy costs around $1,300 to $1,500 for a 28-day supply, depending on the pharmacy and location. In Canada or at a Canadian online pharmacy, you can get Wegovy at a much lower price, somewhere between $600 and $700 for a 28-day supply.
Can I start Wegovy at 1.7 mg?
The recommended starting dose for Wegovy is 0.25 mg once weekly for the first month. After that, the dose is gradually increased over several weeks. The 1.7 mg dose is a step in the dosage escalation process, typically after reaching 1.0 mg. If you start at 1.7 mg without gradually increasing it will increase the risk of side effects.
What to do if you miss a dose of Wegovy?
If you miss a dose of Wegovy and your next scheduled dose is more than 48 hours away, take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it's less than 48 hours away, skip the missed dose and take the next one on your regular day. If you've missed doses for over two weeks, either take the next dose on schedule or consult your healthcare provider about restarting treatment.
How long do you take Wegovy for weight loss?
Wegovy is used long-term with a proper weight management plan, including diet and exercise. Your healthcare provider will regularly assess your progress, and if significant weight loss (at least 5% of your starting weight) is not achieved within 16 weeks at the target dose, they may recommend discontinuing the treatment.
A study showed that most people taking Wegovy lost an average of 10% of their body weight within the first 15 months of treatment and were able to maintain their weight loss over four years with continued use of the medication.
How to get Wegovy online?
To get Wegovy online, you first need a valid prescription from a healthcare provider. You can consult them and they can tell you if Wegovy is right for you. Once you have the prescription, choose a reputable online pharmacy that requires valid prescriptions, such as a certified online Canadian pharmacy. Submit your prescription by uploading it to the pharmacy’s website and place your order.
How long does nausea last with Wegovy?
Nausea with Wegovy is a common side effect, especially when starting or increasing the dose. It usually lasts for a few days to a couple of weeks as your body adjusts to the medication. For most people, the nausea lessens or goes away as treatment continues. If it persists or becomes severe, consult your healthcare provider at once.
Can you inject Wegovy cold?
Yes, you can administer Wegovy right after taking it out of the refrigerator. However, some people are sensitive to the cold fluid and it can cause irritation. It’s perfectly okay to take your Wegovy pen out of the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature before you inject your dose.
